How to Get to Gerês & Get Around

post thumbnail placeholder

Gerês is a destination where having a car makes a big difference.

Not because it’s impossible to get there without one, but because Peneda-Gerês National Park is huge, and its trails, waterfalls, villages, viewpoints and river beaches are spread across different areas.

If you simply want to stay in Vila do Gerês, walk around, eat well and take part in a few organised activities, you can absolutely travel without a car.

But if you want to explore several places independently, a car gives you much more freedom.

And there’s something else that’s important to keep in mind: don’t choose your transport based on distance on the map alone. In Gerês, a journey of just a few kilometres can involve mountain roads, winding bends and considerably more driving time.

Getting to Gerês

🚗 By Car

For anyone who really wants to explore the region, a car is the most practical option.

You can reach Gerês from different parts of Portugal without necessarily having to go through Braga.

If you’re coming from Spain, for example, you can enter directly through Portela do Homem and follow the EN 308-1 towards Vila do Gerês.

If you’re coming from elsewhere in Portugal, choose your route according to your starting point and, above all, the area of Gerês where you’re staying.

You don’t need to memorise roads or access routes.

Your GPS will take care of the navigation.

What you should keep in mind is that some roads are mountain roads, and driving conditions can be quite different from those on a normal motorway journey.

Why a car is useful

Having a car allows you to:

  • get directly to trailheads;
  • visit more remote waterfalls and viewpoints;
  • explore different villages on the same day;
  • easily carry hiking equipment;
  • choose where to eat without depending on public transport timetables;
  • adapt your itinerary to the weather and conditions on the day;
  • return to your accommodation whenever you want.

For a multi-day trip with the aim of exploring a lot of Gerês, I would choose a car.

🚌 Getting to Gerês by Public Transport

You can also reach Gerês by public transport.

The network is more limited than in a city, but there are connections from other parts of Portugal via Braga, which serves as one of the main transport hubs.

From Braga, the Cávado Mobilidade network currently operates:

🚌 Linha 201 — Braga → Vila do Gerês

It passes through Rio Caldo and ends in Vila do Gerês.

It’s the most useful line if your aim is to stay around Vila do Gerês.

🚌 Linha 200 — Braga → Campo do Gerês

It heads towards Terras de Bouro, Covide and Campo do Gerês.

It’s more suitable if your accommodation or travel plans are in this area.

There are also other local services operating around Vila do Gerês, including linhas 503 and 505, so it’s worth checking the Cávado Mobilidade journey planner to find the right connection for your starting point and destination. In some situations, certain stops or routes may be temporarily changed.

🎟️ How to Buy Bus Tickets

Don’t assume that buying a ticket to Gerês works exactly like buying a long-distance train ticket.

Before travelling, check Cávado Mobilidade to confirm:

  • timetable;
  • route;
  • departure stop;
  • destination;
  • price;
  • ticket purchase conditions.

Timetables are one of the main limitations of travelling around Gerês without a car.

There are fewer options than in a city, and you may have several hours between connections, especially when you’re trying to combine different areas.

So don’t plan a hike assuming you can simply catch “the next bus”.

Always check the outbound bus and, most importantly, the last bus back.

The official tourism information itself recommends contacting the relevant operators directly for up-to-date timetables and prices.

✈️ Coming from Porto Airport

If you’re arriving by air through Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro, you have two main options.

🚗 Rent a car

For an exploration-focused trip, this is probably the most convenient option.

Pick up your car at the airport and drive directly to your accommodation.

🚌 Public transport

You can also make the journey by public transport.

Get Bus provides connections between Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro and Braga. From Braga, you can continue to Gerês using the Cávado Mobilidade network.

It’s perfectly possible, but you’ll need to coordinate the timetables of the different connections.

If you’re travelling without a car, plan this part before you arrive at the airport, rather than leaving your connection to Gerês until you land.

🚌 Getting Around Gerês

Here’s the part you really need to keep in mind:

getting to Gerês and exploring Gerês are two different things.

Buses can connect different towns and villages, but there is no public transport network that will easily take you to every waterfall, viewpoint and trailhead you see in photos of Gerês.

So:

🥾 Want to explore many trails?

🚗 Car strongly recommended

🌿 Staying mainly in Vila do Gerês?

🚶 Walking + local buses can work

🚌 Travelling without a car?

Choose your accommodation and activities around the available transport.

Don’t do it the other way around.

🚶 Getting Around Vila do Gerês

Vila do Gerês is relatively compact and, if you stay somewhere central, many of the things you need day to day can be reached on foot.

Restaurants, accommodation, cafés, shops and some services are concentrated within the village itself.

There are also bus services serving the village and connecting it to other areas, including linhas 201, 503 and 505.

But don’t confuse this with a tourist transport system designed to take visitors from waterfall to waterfall.

For more remote locations, you may need:

  • a car;
  • a taxi;
  • private transport;
  • or an organised activity with a local company.

🚕 Taxis, Uber & Bolt

Taxis are an option for some journeys, but don’t plan your entire trip assuming you’ll be able to get a taxi instantly from anywhere in the park.

If you need transport to reach a trail or return from a specific location, arrange it in advance.

And what about Uber or Bolt?

You can check Uber or Bolt before each journey, but treat these apps as a possibility rather than your main transport system.

Ride-hailing availability depends on the number of drivers in the area and, even if an app operates in a particular region, that doesn’t mean a driver will be available exactly when and where you need one.

This is even more important in Gerês because you’re in a mountainous area with a much smaller population than in a city such as Braga or Porto.

You may get lucky and find a driver — but you shouldn’t build your itinerary around that possibility.

If you have an 8:00 a.m. hike in a remote area, don’t assume you’ll simply open Uber at 7:30 and find a car.

For important journeys, a pre-arranged taxi or organised private transport can be a much safer option.

🚗 Driving Around Gerês

Driving in Gerês is relatively straightforward if you’re used to mountain roads, but it’s not the same as driving in a city.

You’ll encounter:

  • narrow roads;
  • bends;
  • steep gradients;
  • areas with limited visibility;
  • forest roads;
  • traffic from other visitors at certain times of year;
  • animals and people on the road.

So, don’t rush.

A distance that looks short on the map may take longer than you expect.

And if your GPS directs you onto a secondary road, check first that it is actually suitable for your vehicle.

🅿️ Parking in Gerês

Parking is something you should plan before you arrive.

Vila do Gerês has parking areas, and the official tourist map identifies several parking areas within the village.

But here’s one of the main disadvantages of bringing a car:

parking can be limited.

During summer, weekends, public holidays and good-weather days, demand increases considerably.

And near some natural attractions or trailheads, the available space can be even more limited.

The Digrexo Rule

Don’t leave parking until the last minute.

If you’re going on a hike in the morning, arrive early.

If you’re staying at accommodation, check whether parking is included or whether you’ll need to use public parking.

And never park somewhere where signs prohibit it, even if other cars are parked there.

🥾 Parking at Trailheads

This is particularly important if you’re coming to Gerês for hiking.

Not every trail starts next to a large parking area.

Some starting points have limited space and, at certain times of year, you may find many cars parked there.

Before you leave:

1. Check the exact trailhead.

2. Check whether authorised parking is available.

3. Check whether the parking area is next to the trailhead or whether you still need to walk.

4. Arrive early when the route is popular.

5. Never block a road, entrance, gate or emergency access.

Don’t assume that because you see other cars parked somewhere, you’re automatically allowed to park there too.

🌲 Some Areas Are Better Explored by Car

One of the advantages of having a car is being able to combine different areas on the same day.

For example, you could plan a day like:

Vila do Gerês → trail → waterfall → viewpoint → dinner in the village

or:

Campo do Gerês → Geira Romana → village → another point of interest

This gives you much more freedom to build your own itinerary.

But don’t try to fit too much into a single day.

In Gerês, travel time is part of the planning.

🗺️ Don’t Plan Your Trip Only From the Map

This is probably one of the best tips we can give you.

When you look at Google Maps, two locations may appear close together.

But in Gerês, distance in kilometres doesn’t tell the whole story.

A winding mountain road with steep gradients is not the same as a flat national road.

So, when planning your day, think about:

driving time + parking time + walking time + activity time.

Not just distance.

📱 Download Your Maps Before You Go

Don’t rely exclusively on mobile coverage.

In mountainous areas, you may encounter places with weak or no signal.

Before you leave, save:

  • the route;
  • the parking location;
  • the trailhead;
  • your accommodation;
  • restaurants you plan to visit;
  • and any other important locations.

If you’re going hiking, it’s even better to have the route available offline.

And always take a fully charged phone and, ideally, a power bank.

🧭 What About GPS?

Use GPS, but don’t follow it blindly.

If an app directs you onto a road that looks too narrow, unpaved or clearly unsuitable for your car, stop and check the route.

GPS is a navigation tool.

It is not a guarantee that the route is the best road for your vehicle or for the conditions at that particular moment.

🚌 Can You Visit Gerês Without a Car?

Yes.

But you’ll need to adapt the type of trip you’re planning.

Without a car, it makes more sense to choose a base such as Vila do Gerês, where accommodation, restaurants, shops and services are relatively concentrated, and choose activities that are easy to reach from there or organised by local operators.

You can also join guided hikes.

In 2026, Associação Gerês Viver Turismo runs an annual programme of guided hikes from April to December, organised by local tourism activity companies.

This can be an excellent solution if you’re travelling alone and don’t want to drive on mountain roads.

🚕 What About Taxis?

Taxis can be useful for some journeys, but don’t plan your entire trip assuming you’ll be able to get a taxi instantly from anywhere in the park.

If you need transport to reach a trail or return from a specific location, arrange it in advance.

This is especially important if you’re travelling without a car and want to do a route that starts and finishes in different places.

Uber and Bolt can be an alternative when available, but in a rural and mountainous area, you shouldn’t expect the same number of drivers you would find in a city. Always check the app at the time and, for important journeys, have a backup plan.

🚙 Do You Really Need a Car?

You probably don’t need one if:

  • you’re mainly staying in Vila do Gerês;
  • you want to do guided hikes;
  • you don’t intend to visit many different areas;
  • you prefer a slower-paced trip;
  • your accommodation is close to restaurants and services.

A car is strongly recommended if:

  • you want to do several different trails;
  • you want to visit waterfalls spread across the region;
  • you want to explore villages;
  • you want to visit Campo do Gerês, Ermida, Fafião or Portela do Homem;
  • you’re travelling with hiking equipment;
  • you want to build your own itineraries.

☀️ Summer Is Different

In summer, the logistics change.

There are more visitors, more cars and greater demand for parking.

If you have a popular trail planned, start early.

As well as making parking easier, you’ll avoid some of the heat and the busiest hours.

And don’t forget that certain roads or areas may have temporary restrictions due to events or other circumstances. Check municipal notices before setting off.

🌧️ And in Bad Weather?

Don’t assume that a road or trail is in the same condition as the one you saw in a summer photograph.

Heavy rain can change driving conditions and make trails, rocks and areas beside rivers much more slippery.

Before a hike, check the weather forecast and local conditions.

If conditions aren’t suitable, change your plans.

Gerês will still be there another time.

Before You Leave: Your Gerês Transport Checklist

☐ Have you confirmed the exact location of your accommodation?

☐ Do you know which area each activity starts in?

☐ Have you checked your driving route?

☐ Do you have your maps available offline?

☐ Have you checked parking?

☐ Have you checked for any traffic restrictions?

☐ Does your phone have enough battery?

☐ Do you have a power bank?

☐ If you’re travelling without a car, have you checked the public transport timetables?

☐ If you need a taxi or private transport, have you arranged it in advance?

☐ Do you know how long you actually need to reach the trailhead?

☐ Have you left enough time to return before dark?

The Best Way to Explore Gerês

If this is your first trip and you want to see a lot of the region, the simplest option is still:

🚗 car + well-located accommodation + planning your trails by area.

You don’t need to spend the entire day driving.

In fact, the best strategy is to group the places you want to visit by area.

That way, instead of crossing Gerês several times in the same day, you can explore one area at a time.

And that’s precisely what makes a trip to Gerês so much more relaxing:

less time travelling, more time in the mountains.
